Closed-captioning is on-screen text that allows the viewer to read an abbreviated version of the on-screen dialogue along with sports commentary and important sounds. The content for closed-captioning is available on all digital terminals, and is supplied by the broadcaster, and not edited by Novus in any way. Also, many TV sets support closed-captioning with RF and baseband inputs.
AMI-tv (Accessible Media Inc), our accessible channel, is a national, English language, descriptive-video, closed-captioned, digital TV service. Licensed by the CRTC, AMI-tv broadcasts conventional and specialty TV programs in open described, closed-captioned format for people who are blind, vision-impaired, deaf or hard of hearing: a world first. AMI-tv is available on channel 888 on the Novus network.
AMI-audio (Accessible Media Inc.) is the world’s largest broadcast reading service making local, national and international news and information accessible. Daily, our volunteers read and record current articles from leading newspapers and magazines, which are broadcast on TV and online into more than 10 million Canadians homes. Together, our staff and volunteers produce and broadcast more than 125 hours of new programming every week. AMI-audio is available on channel 889 on the Novus network.
The AMI-player provides popular AMI-tv programs like Sports Access, Four senses and Canada in Perspective in open described video – eliminating the need for a separate audio track. The AMI-player controls can be read aloud and the player also allows you to fast forward and rewind content. Closed captioning and transcripts are also available. The AMI-player is available free to use, visit www.ami.ca/AMI-tv/Pages/default.aspx and click on one of the programs to start watching AMI content online.

DVS provides a voice-over description of a program’s key visual elements. The narration is inserted during natural pauses in a program’s dialogue. It’s offered by most Canadian broadcasters, and more information is available on individual broadcasters’ websites. If DVS is available for a selected program, then it will automatically be heard if the DVS feature is enabled. DVS can be activated on any Novus digital terminal through the interactive program guide. For more information about how to enable DVS, go to Support.
